The Chartered Institute of Legal Executives (CILEx) is the professional association and governing body for Chartered Legal Executive lawyers, other legal practitioners and paralegals.

CILEx offers a unique route to a legal career and becoming a qualified lawyer without a requirement to having a law degree, although law graduates and graduates with non-law degrees can also qualify as a lawyer through the CILEx route. Entry is accessible to those holding a variety of qualification levels.

Taking the Chartered Legal Executive lawyer route means you can earn-as-you-learn and gain valuable practical experience while those studying traditional law degrees are stuck in the classroom.

Once your Legal Executive studies and qualifying employment are complete you will be able to call yourself a qualified lawyer straight away without having to undertake an LPC or wait for an elusive training contract to become a solicitor.

The level 3 range of qualifications are set at A-level equivalent status.

There is a suite of module options set at this level, which can be built up to form qualifications. The resulting Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice and the Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice are accredited by the Office of the Qualifications and Examinations Regulator (Ofqual).
The Level 3 Professional Diploma in Law and Practice forms the first academic stage in the process of becoming a Chartered Legal Executive lawyer. You can study at your own pace, but the qualification should take you around two years to complete.
The Level 3 Certificate in Law and Practice was developed to recognise the growing number of students who are either interested in a short but rounded introduction to Law and Practice or have a specific learning need within an area of Law and Legal Practice.

Level 3 Diploma in Law and Practice

A Chartered Legal Executive lawyer specialises in a particular area of law, and has trained to the same standard as a solicitor in that area.
Fully qualified and experienced Chartered Legal Executive lawyers are able to undertake many of the legal activities that solicitors do. For example, they will have their own clients (with full conduct of cases) and they can undertake representation in court where appropriate.

Chartered Legal Executive lawyers must adhere to a code of conduct and, like solicitors, are required to continue training throughout their careers in order to keep themselves abreast of the latest developments in the law.
As a general rule, a Chartered Legal Executive lawyer is able to undertake all the same work that may be undertaken by a solicitor, with some conditions.

• If the area of practice is regulated, then they must satisfy the requirements of the relevant regulator.
• If the activity is 'reserved' under the 2007 Act, then they should generally be supervised by an 'authorised person' (as defined under the Act, often a solicitor), or satisfy one of the other exemptions.
Currently, Chartered Legal Executives are able to independently administer oaths, but are not able to independently offer other reserved legal activities.

Salaries will vary according to location and area of law. Starting salaries are usually £15,000 -£28,000 per year whilst qualifying.

After completion of the CILEx qualifications they can expect to earn up to £38,000. They then need three years’ relevant work experience to be a fully qualified Legal Executive lawyers. They can then expect to earn £35,000 - £55,000, and can earn much higher, particularly if they work in a big city or become a partner in a firm.
